Private Homes \ House at Tipperlinn Road, Edinburgh
This design for a new three bedroom house in the Morningside area of Edinburgh proposes a courtyard design in the back garden of the client’s existing house. The site sits on the corner of Tipperlinn Road and Stable Lane and a substantial stone garden wall fronts both road and lane ensuring that the presence of the new house will be virtually invisible from the public realm. The address is through an existing garden door on Tipperlinn Road with a new garage door access to on-site parking from Stable Lane.
The house itself takes on a U-shaped courtyard plan with all rooms looking out onto a central garden space with an additional smaller entrance courtyard which also contains and preserves one of the three plane trees on the site. While the habitable rooms face north they all receive sunlight from a south-facing roof-light. Most of the internal garden elevations will be glazed. The south wall of the property is the boundary with the existing house’s reduced back garden and will be rendered to match the existing house as will the east elevation.
Planning permission was achieved in July 2015 and the project was completed in March 2018.
