Macmillan Centre, Muirhouse, gets planning permission
Our project for an expanded and reorganised centre for North Edinburgh Arts along with a new nursery school, library and housing for the City of Edinburgh has been given planning permission. Drawings are at an advanced stage to allow Robertson Construction to start work on site in early 2022. The project will be completed by late 2023. The image shows the first floor play area for the nursery school, one of the four elements of the building.

Papple Steading, East Lothian
We have been asked by a private client to develop Papple Steading in the south east of Haddington. Originally owned by the Balfour family, it is a largely disused example of the model farms of the agricultural improvement movement. The project will combine an agricultural heritage museum, a business conference centre and some residential accommodation.

The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen, Feasibility Study
We are delighted to have been selected by Aberdeen Performing Arts (who manage three performing arts venues in Aberdeen for Aberdeen City Council), to prepare a feasibility study on the reorganisation, extension and renovation of this unusual and famous venue. The study is due to be complete by March 2022 when we hope to publish our drawings

NEWS OF EXISTING PROJECTS
Richard and colleague Karel spent an enjoyable afternoon on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle capturing views during daylight and night-time of Festival Square. The photographs have been used to create montages of the new Filmhouse as seen from this viewpoint, and a sample lighting panel as a fragment of the proposed illuminated façade is about to be rigged up in the Square itself, to allow planners to gauge the level of light and its variability.

Greenock Ferry Terminal and George Wyllie Gallery

The steel frame for the west wing is complete and the shape of the building is now visible. The whole steel structure and below ground drainage is due for completion just before Christmas.

The Royal High School Project, now retitled as the New National Centre for Music continues to make waves and the project was discussed on Radio 3's Saturday morning programme 'Music Matters'. The full design team has now been appointed and drawing work will begin in earnest in January. Two of our clients have recently produced books featuring buildings designed by us. Maggie's have produced a delightful book entirely about our building in Edinburgh on the occasion of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall's recent visit on the Centre's 25th birthday. If you wish us to send you a copy please contact the office. Maggie's Centre is receiving extensive coverage in the The Daily Telegraph currently as it's one of its four nominated Christmas charities. Meanwhile our client Brian Knox, who together with his wife Lesley commissioned a mews house on Circus Lane in 2000, has produced a book about all six houses he has commissioned over the years. It's quite a collection!
Richard has given lectures to the Greenock Rotary Club about the Greenock Ocean Terminal and George Wyllie Gallery, to students in Aberdeen about the practice's recent work, and to alumni of Trinity College Dublin about the practices' expanding portfolio in Ireland.

The Austrian Government comes to Hart Street
Richard hosted the Austrian delegation at a reception in his house on the eve of the Cop26 Conference in Glasgow. In attendance were the Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, the Ambassador in London H.E. Dr. Michael Zimmerman, various advisers, journalists and guests. Christoph Crepaz, the Honorary Austrian Consul to Scotland, is part of our 'Breakfast Mission Community', (along with the Honorary Swedish Consul), and he and the Ambassador hatched up the idea to hold a reception. The Chancellor requested and received a full tour of the house.

Ray Liotta came to stay...
Meanwhile, Hollywood star Ray Liotta star of 'Goodfellas', 'Field of Dreams' and the voice of Tommy Vercetti in 'Grand Theft Auto Vice City' has been making a film in Dublin and rented the house we designed in Dalkey for a couple of months. The picture from his Instagram account shows him contemplating the sea view from the window designed specifically with that in mind!

And finally, as most of our readers know, we don't send out Christmas cards anymore preferring to send our Christmas wishes with our winter newsletter and make a donation to Maggie's Centre instead. When we had finished our competition design for the Acute Mental Hospital in Antrim, someone turned the plan on its end and remarked that "even if we didn't get the job we had a Christmas card". And indeed that's exactly what has happened. Enjoy! We wish a very happy Christmas to all our readers, clients and friends and a prosperous and Covid-free New Year!
